Tin plated copper connector ferrules (also called bootlace ferrules or tinned copper cord end terminals) are metal tubes used to terminate stranded electrical wires . They prevent wire strands from fraying, spreading, or breaking when clamped inside screw terminals, terminal blocks, or breakers.

By encasing the bare wire in a seamless copper sleeve, they ensure high conductivity, structural integrity, and long-term corrosion resistance.

Key Benefits

Oxidation & Corrosion Resistance: Pure copper oxidizes over time, particularly in humid or harsh environments. The tin plating serves as a sacrificial barrier that completely prevents the underlying copper from corroding.
Elimination of Stray Strands: Loose strands can bypass terminal clamps, causing short circuits or reduction in current capacity. A ferrule neatens the conductor into a solid cylindrical shape.
Lower Contact Resistance: The crimped metal tube forms a gas-tight bond with the wire strands, preventing air pockets and minimizing hotspots or arc risks inside electrical enclosures.
Reusability: Terminals can be connected and disconnected from spring or screw terminals multiple times without damaging the underlying wire core.

Types of Tin-Plated Ferrules

Insulated Ferrules: Feature a color-coded nylon or PVC collar at the base. The insulation provides extra strain relief and helps visually identify wire gauges (e.g., standard DIN or French color codes).
Non-Insulated Ferrules: Plain, bare tin-plated metal tubes. These are ideal for tight spacing or high-temperature environments where plastic components could melt.
Dual-Wire (Twin) Ferrules: Designed with a larger, flared oval insulation collar to accommodate two independent stranded wires, allowing for easy daisy-chaining or parallel connections.

Common Specifications & Sizing

Ferrules must be accurately paired with the wire gauge (AWG or cross-sectional area in mm²) to achieve a proper, gas-tight mechanical bond.

Wire Size (AWG)	Wire Size (mm²)	Common Applications
22 – 18 AWG	0.5 – 0.75 mm²	Control wiring, PLCs, sensors, low-voltage electronics
16 – 14 AWG	1.5 – 2.5 mm²	Standard industrial relay panels, domestic appliances
12 – 10 AWG	4.0 – 6.0 mm²	Power distribution blocks, solar inverters, high-load relays
8 – 1/0 AWG	10 – 50 mm²	Heavy power distribution, battery leads, grounding assemblies

Installation Best Practices

1. Strip Carefully: Strip the wire insulation cleanly to match the length of the ferrule barrel. Avoid cutting or nicking any individual wire strands.
2. Insert Entirely: Insert all stranded wire elements cleanly into the ferrule sleeve until the wire insulation rests flush against the rear collar.
3. Use the Right Tool: Never compress a ferrule using standard pliers. Always use a dedicated ratchet ferrule crimping tool (which uses square or hexagonal jaw profiles) to apply radial pressure evenly across the barrel.
